6th Grade Mathematics Syllabus
Dear Families,
Welcome back!  I hope you all had a restful and an enjoyable summer vacation. In math class, we will explore key mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, extended projects, and references to real-world experiences.  The math curriculum will be based on the Connected Mathematics Project 3 (CMP3) in accordance with the Common Core State Standards.

In hope to create a more accessible math curriculum and give students an opportunity to self-pace, we will continue to adopt the “Flipped Classroom Learning Model.” This learning model is basically reversing the timing of homework and lessons, where students will learn new math concepts via a video at home as homework so majority of the class time can be dedicated to practice and understand how the new concept is applied to various examples. Students are expected to complete a handout associated with the video lesson as reference notes for the interactive discussions or collaborative work the next day. Some of the benefits of this learning model are that:
·      Students can learn at their own pace, pause and/or re-watch the video lesson whenever needed.
·      Free up more class time for students to practice and apply new knowledge under the teacher’s guidance. (I no longer need to stand in front of the classroom talking at students; I can circulate and talk with students to provide more real time feedbacks.)
·      A sick day will no longer interrupt a student’s ability to learn.

It is essential that students complete assignments on time and your support is needed to ensure your child is prepared for class each day. Please visit the math class website regularly for homework and video lessons updates. I look forward to a productive and energetic year with you and your child.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns via email at: slips126@gmail.com

Sincerely,
Susie Li

Course Description:
In this class, we will be exploring key mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, extended projects, and references to real-world experiences.  Instructional time will focus on developing student’s proficiency and efficiency in:
·       Multiplying and dividing rational numbers (including fractions and decimals) using standard algorithms
·       Using concepts of ratio, rate and proportion to solve real-world and mathematical problems
·       Writing, interpreting, and solving expressions and equations
·       Statistical analysis and thinking
·       Determining the area, perimeter, volume, and surface area of two-/three-dimensional shapes
-Adopted from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
Class Expectations:
Students are expected to respect the working environment by using all the equipment and tools provided for its intended purposes. For example, the iPad should only be used for educational purpose. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the class website for homework updates and make up the missing work as soon as possible.
